• The landing is not over until the aircraft stops. How often have you heard that? So when do after landing checks get done? That’s right, once the aeroplane is clear of the runway and stopped. Don’t go retracting the flaps, switching off systems or lights as you roll down the runway, it’s not wise, not professional and one day after a long and tiring flight you might just regret it. An old colleague of mine once recounted how, after a long flight in a military jet, he watched his hand reach out, remove the guard and blow off the detachable drop tanks while rolling down the runway. He wasn’t popular with Tower, the fire crews or the aircraft in the stream behind him after that. Strange things happen when you’re tired, so stop, get the check list out and go through it systematically.
