• In the course of training and examining I often come across pilots who do not get things done in a timely manner. Take the situation where a pilot is in receipt of vectors for an approach. I regularly see that the avionics are left in Navigation mode, either GPS or VOR and the ILS remains in the standby position often until we are on a closing heading for the localiser. This is not a problem provided it is remembered or nothing else is going on at that point. On the G430 displaying on a traditional HSI this can lead to disaster, at least on G1000 the needle colour is a big hint. My mantra is that once a frequency is finished with then the box should quickly be tuned to the next frequency that is needed. “No #$%& Sherlock” I hear you say. “What if no another frequency is planned?” Well back up the one in use. I must admit I am not a fan of duplicating frequencies in an avionics suite but if there is no other planned then why have a redundant box.
